How the pattern is laid out
The layout uses two bead colours: one for a raised dot and one for an empty position. Each braille cell becomes a group of six beads, read as two columns of three.
Every cell takes all six positions, so a six-letter word in lowercase is thirty-six beads, and each capital letter adds a cell of six for its capital sign. A space between two words is a cell as well, a blank one: six beads of the empty colour. The count is given under the pattern.
In this layout a raised dot and an empty position are both beads and differ only in colour, so the pattern is read by eye and not by touch. The dot sizes and spacing the ADA Standards set for braille on signs are on the dimensions page.
