How a fifteen-year-old redesigned reading

Braille did not come from a battlefield code, and the man who inspired it was not a soldier at the time. What the sources actually say, and what it explains about the alphabet.

The story everyone tells, including this page until recently

Almost every account of braille opens the same way: Napoleon wanted a code his soldiers could read in the dark without a lamp, an army captain called Charles Barbier invented one, and a blind boy improved it. This page said a version of it too. It is worth being precise about which parts survive checking, because the real account is more interesting and it explains more about the code.

Barbier was not a soldier when he invented it

Charles Barbier de la Serre served in the French artillery from 1784 to 1792, left France during the Revolution, spent several years in the United States, and returned under Napoleon — without rejoining the military. His writing systems came more than twenty years after he left the army. He was a shorthand enthusiast, and in his 1815 Essai sur divers procédés d'expéditive française he says plainly what he was after: conventional writing takes too long to learn, and people who work for a living — he names farmers and artisans — cannot spare the years. He was arguing for mass literacy. He also wrote, in the same book, about the barriers facing readers who could not see or hear.

It was not phonetic, and it was not called sonography

The system usually described as Barbier's is a phonetic one, and the word attached to it is “sonography”. Barbier never used that word in any of his publications. The term appears to trace to Pierre Henri's 1952 biography of Braille, and has been repeated since. Barbier's first system was simpler than the legend: the ordinary alphabet arranged in a five-by-five grid, W left out because French of the period barely used it, each letter written as its row and column.

The pupils chose the alphabet over the phonetics

Barbier wrote to the Royal Institution for Blind Youth in Paris and was turned down — the first director had invested heavily in raised type and was not interested. When that director left in 1821 Barbier wrote again, and the new head, Alexandre-René Pignier, had a pupil learn the method and demonstrate it to the school and its board. It worked. But the pupils, who already knew the alphabet, used the grid with ordinary letters and quietly ignored the phonetic version Barbier kept promoting. The people using the system had already begun redesigning it.

Halving the cell

Louis Braille was born in Coupvray on 4 January 1809 and blinded by an accident with a stitching awl in his father's harness workshop at the age of three; the infection spread to the other eye, most likely as sympathetic ophthalmia, and he was totally blind by five. He was a pupil at the Institution when Barbier's method arrived. He made the columns uniform and cut the maximum of twelve dots to six, so that a fingertip could take in a whole character without moving — the single decision the whole code rests on. He presented it in 1824, at fifteen.

The dashes he removed

The first published version, in 1829, was not the braille we use. It used dots and dashes. The dashes were too hard to read by touch and he dropped them in the second edition of 1837, which is the system that survives. It is the least-known revision in the story and the most instructive: the thing that makes braille work is not what was added but what was taken out. He built it using Barbier's own slate and stylus.

The school banned it for four years

Pignier supported the code and let it be taught. In 1840 he was forced out by a younger teacher, Pierre-Armand Dufau, who opposed it — the familiar version of this story has Dufau burning the books. Another teacher, Joseph Guadet, kept the argument alive, and the system was reintroduced in 1844 when the school moved to the Boulevard des Invalides. Braille himself was ill for most of it: a respiratory illness long believed to be tuberculosis, which he lived with for sixteen years and which forced him to give up teaching at forty. He died in Paris in 1852, two days after his forty-third birthday.

The blind pupils won it

The Institution formally adopted his system in 1854, two years after he died — and the sources are consistent about why: the overwhelming insistence of the blind pupils themselves. It spread through the French-speaking world first and was slower elsewhere; by the first all-European conference of teachers of the blind in 1873 it had become the cause to champion. Braille was moved to the Panthéon on the centenary of his death.

What the French origin left in the alphabet

Braille designed the code for French, and the structure still shows it. The first ten letters use only the top four dots; the next ten add dot 3; the next add dots 3 and 6. The letter w breaks the pattern completely, because French of the time barely used it and it had to be bolted on afterwards — which is why w sits where it does rather than between v and x in the shape sequence.

Standardisation took another century and a half

Competing tactile codes persisted for decades, and English-speaking countries used incompatible systems well into the twentieth century. Unified English Braille, the standard this site follows, was adopted across the major English-speaking countries between 2012 and 2016 — recent enough that older reference material may not match, and recent enough that the tables software ships are still catching up.
