How braille is written: slate, stylus, writer and embosser
Four ways braille gets onto paper, and why the oldest one still writes right to left.
Slate and stylus
A slate holds the paper while a stylus presses each dot through it. It is cheap, silent, pocket-sized, and the direct equivalent of a pen and notebook. Because the dots are pressed from the back and read from the front, writing with a slate goes right to left and each cell is mirrored — the page is then turned over to read. It is less awkward than it sounds after a few hours of practice.
The braille writer
A mechanical braille writer has six keys, one per dot, plus a space bar. Pressing a combination embosses a whole cell at once, left to right, the way a typewriter works. It is faster than a slate and the standard tool in classrooms. The one nearly every reader learns on is the Perkins Brailler, designed in the 1930s and sold essentially unchanged since 1951.
Refreshable displays
An electronic display raises and lowers small pins to render a line of braille from a computer or phone, refreshing as you move through the text. It is how most braille is read day to day now, and it is why braille literacy has become more useful with technology rather than less.
Embossers
An embosser is a printer for braille, producing physical pages from a digital file. This is where transcription accuracy stops being academic: an embossed error is a permanent error on a page someone is relying on.
