How to recognise it
Seven letters in two cells, and the first cell is not a b. It is the be- sign — the same cell as a semicolon, and the same cell that writes “be” as a word. Nothing in English begins with these seven letters except the word itself, so the two cells never have to be read any other way.
Two steps, not one
Abbreviated in letters first, then written in cells. “because” loses 4 letters — a, u, s, e — to become bec. Then it contracts again: be is a single cell, which is how 3 letters of abbreviation fit into 2 cells.
